On February 20, 2016 EPR Trillium’s very own Mr. Don Di Carlo, keyboard player in The Firehall All-Star Band played at the annual Firehall Reunion at the London Music Hall. The Firehall was a hot spot for live music where musicians felt at home and crowds felt like family. The legend lives on in London every year with a Fire Hall Reunion. This year, Don’s band accepted an award for the Jimmy Lewis Lifetime Achievement in Blues! Congratulations Don and band-mates!
Here is his acceptance speech on behalf of the band:
“Thank you once more for the award. I was truly shocked and did not expect it. When I brought the award home, I remembered all of the many times I played at your Firehall with so many different musicians including with the late Jim Lewis. So many good times. And again I have to give you thanks for establishing that venue for the musicians in London and the rest of Canada and abroad that had the opportunity to play there. A venue such as this allowed musicians the opportunity to express their art. For me, it’s where I cut my teeth on the blues and R&B. With this stuff, you learn on the gig, how to play with a groove, how to find the groove, how to solo, comp etc. The Firehall venue helped me immensely. It helped create a musical community as well for players in London to congregate, hang out and share music. When I got home last night and reflected on all of this, I realized how important this award is for all of us that had the chance to play there and in the name and memory of Jim Lewis, fellow musician, friend who passed on too soon.”
